The President of Lithuania said that Europe should become an equal partner of the United States in the field of defense.

Europe must strive to reach the level of an equal security partnership with Washington. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda stated this on national radio LRT.

“The strategic autonomy of Europe, which until recently was interpreted as a kind of competition with NATO, is now perceived completely differently,” he said. “Today this means that Europe wants to take on more responsibility in developing the defense industry and increasing its own security.”

The goal of this process, according to the Lithuanian leader, should be to reach a different level of transatlantic partnership.

“We must become not only a reliable, but also an equal partner of the United States,” the president emphasized.

He noted that in order to eliminate imbalances it is necessary to go through this path as quickly as possible. “We have to admit that in the past there was no such partnership,” Nauseda said.
