Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she did not share US President Donald Trump’s intention to withdraw American troops from Italy

“The United States has been discussing the withdrawal of troops from Europe for some time, so we need to strengthen our security and increase our response capability. This choice does not depend on me, but I personally do not share it,” Meloni said, commenting on the US plans to withdraw troops from Italy on the sidelines of the European Political Community summit in Yerevan.

She stressed that Italy has always fulfilled its obligations within the framework of NATO, even when it was not about the direct interests of Rome.

On May 2, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed  the US decision to withdraw 5,000 American troops from Germany within 6-12 months.

Trump had previously allowed the withdrawal of troops not only from Germany, but also from Italy and Spain.
