The EU and Armenia agreed on defense cooperation at the first summit

Following the results of the first summit with Armenia in Yerevan, the European Union supported further rapprochement and “European aspirations” of Armenia, and also agreed to invest about 2.5 billion euros in the Armenian economy and promised progress towards easing the visa regime and defense cooperation, follows from a joint statement following the summit.

“The EU reaffirms its firm commitment to further strengthen relations with Armenia and support its sovereignty … a comprehensive reform program … the EU recognizes the European aspirations of the Armenian people … supports Armenia’s desire to deepen partnership through sectoral integration and legal rapprochement with the EU,” the document says.

Brussels and Yerevan also agreed to “strengthen cooperation on preventing and suppressing circumvention of (anti-Russian) EU sanctions.”

The European Union estimated its expected investments in the Armenian economy in the near future at 2.5 billion euros.

“Armenia welcomes the EU’s support in developing a roadmap for decommissioning the Armenian nuclear power plant,” the joint statement said after the summit.


The EU also confirmed its intention to strengthen cooperation with Armenia “on the full range of security and defense issues” and welcomed “significant progress in the dialogue on visa liberalization.
