Kindergartens in Freiburg, Germany, will introduce a vegetarian menu due to rising prices.

Due to inflation and rising food prices, German Freiburg will make food for children in primary schools and kindergartens only vegetarian, the city authorities said.

It is noted that earlier primary schools and kindergartens of the city offered a choice of two options for lunch menus, and parents could choose either a meal with meat and fish or a vegetarian option for their children.

“Yesterday, the city council decided to offer only one vegetarian menu starting in the 2023/2024 school year. The prerequisite for this decision was the rise in food prices due to inflation,” the city government portal said on Wednesday.

It is clarified that Freiburg wants to continue to offer high-quality meals to children, and other adjustments need to be made to prevent a further increase in the cost of meals.

“By offering only one menu option, the administrative burden and effort required to serve meals will be reduced, thus reducing costs,” the city explained.

However, they added that this decision is not related to the ban on meat in schools and kindergartens. Children will be allowed to continue to bring sausage sandwiches, and they can continue to grill sausages at school parties.

“School principals and kindergarten leaders were informed about the new concept at an early stage and expressed their support. The Parent Council was also informed,” the authorities specified.
