The Pentagon will review the deployment of forces in Europe, the head of the US military Pete Hegseth said.
⠀
“This will be done to ensure that NATO moves quickly towards leadership in Europe, strengthen the alliance’s responsibility for the defense of the region and ensure that our forces meet America’s global needs,” he said at a meeting of the heads of the Defense Ministries of the organization’s member countries.
⠀
According to him, some allies may “fail” in the process.
⠀
“Ultimately, the review is aimed at both improving the structure of the US Armed Forces and strengthening NATO 3.0,” the Pentagon chief added.
⠀
At the same time, he noted that Washington’s further contribution to the alliance will directly depend on an increase in defense spending by its members.
⠀
Recently, the American authorities have been increasingly criticizing NATO and raising the question of its future. President Donald Trump has repeatedly demanded that European countries increase their investments in the organization’s defense capability to five percent of GDP. He even allowed the United States to withdraw from the alliance. The conflict in the Middle East has also worsened the situation: the allies refused to help the United States in the operation against Iran.
