The EU is preparing to change the terms of membership in the union for future members with a number of significant restrictions for 5-15 years, including the withdrawal of the right of veto, for Ukraine and Moldova, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said.

“This will be a new generation of accession agreements (for new members ) in the sense that we will have new security guarantees that will ensure exactly what you mentioned (non-use of the veto), so that we can be sure that the new members will follow European rules 5, 10 or 15 years later,” she said, answering the question whether the EU is not afraid that Ukraine will use the right of veto uncontrollably by joining the union.

In June 2022, the EU granted Ukraine and Moldova the status of candidate countries. The European Union has repeatedly acknowledged that this decision was largely symbolic in order to support Kiev and Chisinau in their confrontation with Moscow.
