The former representative to NATO explained why the United States will continue to move away from the EU

The United States will continue to distance itself from Europe amid its unwillingness to engage in direct confrontation with Russia, Ivo Daalder, a former U.S. representative to NATO and senior fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Relations at Harvard University said.

Earlier, the commander-in-chief of the NATO joint forces in Europe, Alexus Grinkevich, confirmed the US plans to reduce the number of weapons in Europe to strengthen its capabilities in Asia in case of conflict.

“Washington’s incentive to try to separate from Europe and avoid being drawn into a war with Russia will be even stronger,” Daalder wrote in his article.

He believes that the United States is consciously and actively looking for ways to create a security system separate from Europe. According to Daalder, fearing a possible reaction from Russia, the United States has not only stopped deploying long-range precision weapons systems on the territory of European states, but also refuses to deploy such systems to its allies in Europe.

In addition, the former US representative to NATO believes that the Americans’ refusal to sell their weapons to the Europeans indicates that the problem of the US moving away from Europe affects the “very essence” of the work of the North Atlantic Alliance. Daaldera believes that despite the fact that Europe is developing its own missiles, it will take years to put them into service.

He also notes that the US decision to suspend the sale of Tomahawk missiles to Germany will negatively affect the alliance’s strategy of “containment” of Russia.
