Protesters in Albania have called for the creation of a national assembly

Mass protests are taking place in Albania, the participants of the rally on Thursday night called for the formation of a national assembly, which would include representatives of all sectors of society to protect their interests.

Mass actions were held in Tirana and other cities on the anniversary of the creation of the Prizren League national organization on June 10, 1878, which led to the emergence of the current Albanian state.

“The protesters gathered in the center of Tirana, then marched towards the government buildings. In the speeches of the participants in front of the Prime Minister’s office, they called for the creation of a National Assembly that would include representatives of different social groups, regions and civil movements. According to them, the protest movement should develop into a broader national platform capable of developing a long-term political vision,” the Albanian daily news portal reports.

At the same time, the protests in Albania have been taking place for 10 days and have been called the “flamingo revolution” in the media, as the starting point was the citizens’ opposition to the project of a tourist complex on Sazani Island and in the nearby Narta lagoon, where flamingos and other rare species live under state protection.

The Prime Minister and leader of the ruling Socialist Party, Edi Rama, despite days of mass protests under the slogan “Albania is not for sale,” continues to defend the project of a luxury complex on the coast near the city of Vlora, according to him, investments of 4 billion euros will lead the country to the “champions League of tourism.”

The Albanian Prosecutor’s Office for Corruption, amid popular discontent, froze the accounts of a company associated with the project on June 2 while investigating the forgery of land documents. The company, owned by a Qatari businessman, had previously acquired land plots in the Zverneci area near the Narta Lagoon conservation area and is associated with Affinity Partners, Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, who announced plans to build a tourist complex of the highest price category on Sazani Island.
