Von der Leyen told when the EU will consider lifting sanctions against Iran

The European Union will consider lifting sanctions against Iran after it notices changes in Tehran’s behavior “on the ground,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Monday.

Earlier, Italy, France, Germany and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement saying they were ready to lift sanctions on Iran after an agreement was reached between Tehran and Washington.

“The principle of sanctions is that we need real changes on the ground before we can think about lifting them,” von der Leyen told reporters.

She also pointed out that “sanctions are imposed to change the behavior” of countries, and only after it changes, restrictions can be lifted.

“If the behavior changes reliably and it is verifiable, then the sanctions can be lifted,” she said.

US President Donald Trump and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharib-Abadi confirmed the completion of the memorandum of understanding, which will be signed in Switzerland on June 19.
