Hungary has agreed to start negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU on June 15, but this is only the first step in a multi-year process, Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar said.

“Because the Government of Ukraine has officially committed itself to fulfilling the historic agreement (on the rights of Hungarians in Transcarpathia)… Hungary was able to agree to the opening of the first negotiation bloc between the EU and Ukraine on Monday, June 15,” Magyar said in a video message posted on Facebook.

At the same time, Magyar stressed that “the opening of the first negotiating block is only the first step in a long process,” and cited the example of Montenegro, which began accession negotiations in 2012, but has not yet been able to complete them.
