The US is no longer ready to protect all NATO allies, Borrell said.

The US is no longer ready to protect all NATO allies, Borrell said.

EU diplomacy chief Josep Borrell said the US is no longer prepared to “defend all NATO allies in all circumstances,” forcing the EU to strengthen its own defense capabilities.

“NATO is at the center of our collective security. But NATO must also recognize a changing world and change with it. It was previously believed that strengthening strategic European responsibility for its own security would damage NATO and lead to disunity with the United States… This risk of disunity no longer comes from the European side, it comes from US policy,” he said at a forum in Brussels.

According to him, during visits to the United States, American politicians “themselves said – take more responsibility for your own European security.”

“The other side on the other side of the Atlantic can no longer maintain its commitment to engage in the defense commitment of all NATO allies in all circumstances,” he added.
