Erdogan nominated as candidate in Turkish presidential election

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) nominated Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday as the People’s Alliance’s candidate in the summer 2023 presidential election, AKP spokesman Omer Celik said.

“The candidate from the People’s Alliance will be our President Tayyip Erdogan. We have finally decided on this topic,” Celik said.

Presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey are scheduled for June 2023. The People’s Alliance ruling bloc includes the AKP and the far-right Nationalist Movement Party (MHP). Meanwhile, the opposition parties have not yet named their candidates. In addition, a bloc of six opposition parties insists on holding early elections.

Erdogan won the presidential elections on August 10, 2014, and in 2018 he was re-elected head of state in early elections
