A new doomsday plane is being developed in the United States.

The US Air Force has awarded a $13 billion contract to aircraft manufacturer Sierra Nevada Corporation to develop a doomsday aircraft to replace the aging E-4B.

“The Survivable Airborne Operations Center (SAOC) project is designed to replace aging 1970s-era aircraft that are nearing the end of their service life,” an Air Force spokesman said in a statement.

It is noted that the new aircraft will be equipped with a jet engine, which will be strengthened and modified in accordance with military requirements. The work is expected to be completed in 2036.

The E-4B aircraft, an upgraded civilian Boeing 747-200, is used to transport the US Secretary of Defense, but it is designed as a command post and can withstand a nuclear explosion, the agency said. At the same time, the publication recalled that its service life will expire in the early 2030s.
