Germany says Nord Stream 2 is not certified and cannot be launched

The Nord Stream 2 pipeline is not certified and therefore cannot be launched as a replacement for Nord Stream during the period of technical work on the latter. This was stated on Friday at a briefing by the representative of the Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection of Germany, Beate Baron.

“The Nord Stream 2 pipeline is not certified and thus not allowed to operate,” she said, answering the question whether the German government has plans to use the gas pipeline in light of the decrease in flow through Nord Stream.

The construction of Nord Stream 2 was fully completed on September 10, 2021. Initially, it was planned to be completed before the end of 2019, but due to US sanctions, work was delayed. The gas pipeline consists of two strings with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters per year, which run from the coast of Russia through the Baltic Sea to Germany. Speaking at SPIEF 2022, the head of Gazprom, Alexei Miller, said that both lines of Nord Stream 2 are under pressure and gas can be delivered to Germany right now.
