More than 1.7 thousand people died in Spain and Portugal due to the heat

Heatwaves in Portugal and Spain have killed at least 1,700 people, World Health Organization (WHO) European Bureau chief Hans Kluge said in a statement on the agency’s website on Friday.

“This year we have already witnessed more than 1,700 unnecessary deaths during the current heat wave in Spain and Portugal alone,” the document says.

As Kluge noted, he is concerned that wildfires are now happening even far north, in Scandinavia, this week fires in London destroyed 41 houses.

Abnormally hot weather has recently set in a number of European countries. The representative of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Robert Stefansky, said that the abnormally high air temperature in Europe will continue until the middle of next week.
