Tokyo will not allow Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the funeral of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, according to Japanese government sources.

The authorities do not intend to weaken the personal sanctions that they imposed against the Russian leader after the start of the special operation in Ukraine.

“However, diplomatic relations with Moscow have not been severed, so the Russian side will be notified of the ceremony,” the source said.

At the same time, it is noted that Putin did not declare his desire to attend the funeral, and the Japanese Foreign Ministry does not expect his visit. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also reported that the president would not attend the farewell ceremony.
