Nehammer urges EU not to let Putin set electricity prices

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer called for a single EU-level solution to limit electricity tariffs. They should be decoupled from gas prices and closer to generation costs, he says.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer called on the European Union to take a unified decision on limiting electricity tariffs in connection with a sharp rise in energy prices, in particular gas. His statement, timed to coincide with the EU energy summit.

“We must finally stop this madness that is happening in the energy markets right now. And this can only be done with the help of a European solution,” he said.

According to him, the tariff for electricity should be separated from the price of gas and reduced to the actual cost of generation.

“We should not let Putin decide the price of electricity in Europe every day,” Nehammer said.
