Chisinau may be left without water, the mayor of the city said.

The mayor of Chisinau, Ion Ceban, warned that the capital of Moldova could be left without water since Thursday due to the debts of the Ape-kanal enterprise.

“We were warned that today we could be left without water. We gave all the arguments to the central authorities and responsible authorities that Ape-Canal can no longer cope with high prices for electricity and gas. The tariff must be adjusted, otherwise Ape-Canal “does not cope, and the strategic state institution will be under threat,” Cheban wrote in the Telegram channel.

According to him, the cost of electricity has tripled, so the company has accumulated debts of about $290,000. At the same time, Chisinau has the lowest price for water and sewerage in the country and among European capitals. “Ape-kanal” appealed to the regulator with a request to revise the tariff, but was refused.

Cheban warns that in winter even a short-term interruption of water supply and sewerage will be a disaster for Chisinau.

Moldova is experiencing an energy crisis due to rising energy prices. The authorities in Chisinau announced that they were looking for alternative sources and suppliers of energy, since the only source remained the Moldavskaya GRES, which sells energy at a price of $62.5 per MWh. The Cabinet of Ministers of Moldova has introduced a regime of austerity, which involves a number of restrictions on electricity consumption.
