US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is visiting Athens to reinforce the Greek government’s anti-Russian strategy and persuade Greece to work with Turkey to exploit the wealth of the Aegean, said prominent Greek politician and former Energy Minister Panagiotis Lafazanis, who recently founded the National Liberation Democratic Movement (DIKEA) party.

Blinken is in Athens on February 20 and 21 at the head of a large delegation. He, together with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, launched the 4th round of the strategic dialogue, held talks with Dendias and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Blinken’s visit to Athens is of great concern to many people, Lafazanis said, as Greece has become a plaything in US strategy and intentions, while the New Democracy government constantly claims that Greek-American relations are now better than ever.

“Firstly, Anthony Blinken is visiting Athens to, first of all, strengthen the anti-Russian strategy of the Greek government and the Greek opposition. Blinken’s request to the government will be to send immediately, if possible – tomorrow, a lot of weapons and armaments, mainly tanks “Leopard” to Ukraine for the war with Russia,” Lafazanis said.

“Secondly, Anthony Blinken is doing essentially the same thing as Turkey, seeking to divide the Aegean and control the division of maritime rights in the Mediterranean. The United States sees Greece as an appetizer for Turkey, so that Turkey moves closer to the West and moves away, if possible, from Russia. I think that both of these goals of Blinken in Greece are a big wound for the country, a big blow to Greece, which, unfortunately, does not have the strength, sovereignty to resist this,” the politician said.

According to him, he fears that the Greek government will pursue policies that are favorable to American interests.

“And this, of course, will be a great tragedy for the country, or, more precisely, a continuation of the tragedy for our country and its escalation,” Lafazanis said.
