A fire in a residential building killed 16 people in Dubai.

A massive fire in a five-story building in the old part of Dubai has killed 16 people and injured nine others, the Dubai Civil Defense Service said.

The fire broke out on Saturday on the fourth floor of an apartment building in the Al Ras district, home to Dubai’s oldest market and home to its many workers and traders.

“The fire led to the death of 16 people, another nine were injured. A preliminary investigation showed that the fire was caused by non-compliance with the requirements for the protection and safety of the building,” the statement said.

In connection with the incident, the rescue service reminded property owners and residents of Dubai of the need to “completely comply with safety requirements and instructions in order to avoid incidents.”
