Moldova should not join the European Union at any cost, the former prime minister said.

The Moldovan authorities intend to hold a referendum on joining the EU without knowing what the conditions for accession are, which carries great risks,  the chairman of the Development and Unification Party of Moldova, former Prime Minister Ion Chicu said.

On April 16, the Constitutional Court of Moldova approved the introduction of provisions on European integration into the constitution and the holding of a corresponding referendum. The popular vote is planned to be held in the fall on the same day as the presidential election. According to President Maia Sandu, a possible date for the event is October 20.

“Voting “for” means that a name will appear in the constitution that leaves simple decisions to the discretion of the majority, laws that affect the sovereignty of the country, that generally change course. In our opinion, these are very big risks.

Referendum on EU integration is necessary when the conditions for entry are known. We are not going to join somewhere at any cost,” Chicu said.

According to him, representatives of his party will explain to citizens the possible consequences of participation in the referendum.
