New COVID strain hits Swiss resort of St Moritz

Switzerland’s health authorities have signalled that the new variant of the COVID-19 appeared in the luxury Swiss ski resort of St Moritz on Monday, SwissInfo reports. Mass testing of residents will take place on Tuesday.

The Swiss health ministry has ordered to quarantine two hotels and closed ski schools in St Moritz. In its efforts to curb an outbreak of the highly infections new coronavirus strain, the stricter health protocol was initiated.

St Moritz located in the eastern canton of Grisons has faced the new coronavirus variant. Since Monday, everyone to wear masks in the town of 5,200 that prides itself as a birthplace of modern winter sports.

In Switzerland, the trend of closing public places is intensifying in some places. While closing restaurants, bars, theatres and recreational venues to limit the spread of the infection, the Alpine nation has left ski lifts open as long as they maintain strict regimens to protect public health.

“About a dozen cases are currently known in two hotels. To protect the health of the population and guests, the health department has quarantined the two hotels and ordered corona tests for their employees and guests,” Swiss canton Grisons said in a statement.
