Russia’s Ambassador Churkin to UN dies in New York at 64

Vitaly Churkin, the Ambassador of Russian Federation to UN, died suddenly while at work in New York. The sad news appeared at the Russia’s Foreign ministry site. The veteran diplomat would have celebrated his 65th birthday on Tuesday.

The death of Vitaly Churkin, a stalwart diplomat who represented Russian Federation at the UN, became a topic subject in all news. According to the doctors, cause of the veteran diplomat’s death is unclear.

Mr Churkin was known as a steadfast defender of Russian policy in the UN, the Soviet and Russian diplomat was a wise and the versatile person. In 1990s, he was a special representative to the talks on former Yugoslavia in the early 1990s.

On Tuesday, Vitaly Churkin suffered from cardiac arrest while at the Russian Mission on East 67th Street, he was taken to New York’s Presbyterian Hospital, where he died.

Today, all the members of the UN General Assembly stood for a moment of silence in memory of Mr Churkin. Peter Thomson said that Russian representative was a respected and influential member, the big UN family express the deepest condolences to his family.

The outstanding Russian diplomat had the great intellect and consummate diplomatic skills, he will be remembered for these qualities as well as for his good humour and consideration for others.

Samantha Power who was a colleague of Churkin, paid on social media a tribute to the unbelievable Russian diplomat. She wrote on Twitter:

“Devastated by passing of Russian UN Amb Vitaly Churkin. Diplomatic maestro and deeply caring man who did all he could to bridge US-RUS differences.”
