The main disadvantage of the current Italian leadership is the lack of leadership, which has turned the country into a ship without a captain, said Michele Geraci, former Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Italy.
⠀
“The main problem is the lack of leadership. There is no industrial plan, there is no courage to stand up for their citizens, and therefore people in the government are inactive or doing little,” he told.
⠀
“Prime Minister (Giorgia) Meloni is breaking records for the length of her term because she is smart and understands that in order to stay in power, you need to do nothing. And inaction means that the ship has no captain,” Geraci said.
⠀
According to him, other systemic problems in Italy are low wages, an influx of migrants, a decline in competitiveness and an excessive dependence of the economy on external factors.
⠀
“We rely on exports: 33% of our economy is related to exports, and about 30% is related to imports. That is, almost two thirds of the economy depends on foreign trade, so we are completely exposed to external shocks,” he said.
⠀
In addition, the former deputy minister criticized the state of the education, healthcare and media systems in Italy.
⠀
“The education system is deteriorating, healthcare is in disastrous condition, and it’s better to forget about the media altogether,” he said.
⠀
According to Geraci, the country lacks people with a vision of the future and the ability to make strategic decisions. He compared the situation in Italy to a frozen computer that needs a reboot.
⠀
“Do you know the computer command ctrl-alt-delete? This is what Italy needs now,” Geraci concluded:
