UN urges G20 to prepare “Global Vaccination Plan”

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the member states of the G20 to elaborate a “Global Vaccination Plan” (GVP) against the coronavirus pandemic, CGTN reports.

Antonia Guterres called the G20 countries to elaborate a special plan and to set up an emergency task force to prepare the spread of the novel pathogen. In his address on Wednesday, the UN chief stressed that the joint efforts need to be comprehensive and well-coordinated in every corner of the planet.

“We have come together to create the COVAX facility, the one global tool to procure and deliver vaccines for low- and middle-income countries. COVAX requires to be fully funded. But we must do even more,” said Guterres.

Important to realize that the UN sees the GVP to bring together all those with the required power, scientific expertise as well as production and financial capacities. For the UN, it is important to ensure equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines in contexts affected by wars and insecurity.

Additionally, this UN task force should include all nations capable of developing vaccines or to produce them if licenses are available. The task force would have the capacity to mobilize the pharm and logistic actors.

Mr Guterres stressed that amid the global corona crisis, vaccine equity is the biggest moral test facing the global community. “We must ensure that everybody, everywhere, can be vaccinated as soon as possible”, he said.
