The Government of Japan confirmed the country’s participation in the Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2 projects

National companies of Japan will retain their participation in the Russian investment projects Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2, as this is extremely important for the economic security of the country.

According to official data, Japan receives 3.6 and 8.8% of oil and liquefied natural gas, respectively, from Russia. At the same time, liquefied natural gas produced under the Sakhalin-2 project accounts for 3% of these indicators.

Japan motivated the refusal to withdraw from the Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2 projects by the fact that this could weaken the effect of sanctions, since a country friendly to Russia could acquire shares in them and thereby strengthen its position.

Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan announced the introduction of a ban on the export to Russia of goods that contribute to the strengthening of the country’s industrial infrastructure, as well as the expansion of the sanctions list.
