US Ambassador to the UN Thomas-Greenfield announced her desire to discuss reforming the Security Council

US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said that the country wants to discuss the reform of the organization’s Security Council at the upcoming high-level session of the UN General Assembly at the end of September. She is going to raise this topic together with US President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

“We must reach consensus on reasonable and credible proposals to increase the membership of the Security Council. During the General Assembly this month, President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and I plan to hold broad consultations on our individual and collective responsibilities under the UN Charter, including on the critical issues of reforming the Security Council and other UN bodies,” the diplomat said.

She emphasized that it is necessary not to defend the status quo, but to show a willingness to compromise. Thomas-Greenfield added that the Security Council needs to better reflect the global realities that exist today.
