Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she was disappointed by the decision of the British Supreme Court to recognize the holding of an independence referendum in Scotland without the consent of the British government as illegal, but respects it.

“Despite the fact that I am disappointed, I respect the decision of the UK Supreme Court,” she wrote on her Twitter.

However, Sturgeon noted that the court does not draw up laws, but only interprets them. According to her, the law, which does not allow Scotland to choose its future without the consent of the British government, “shows that any presentation of the UK as a voluntary partnership is a myth.”

The First Minister added that despite the decision of the court, Scotland remains a democratic country, and its “voice” on the issue of independence cannot be silenced.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has repeatedly announced her intention to hold a referendum in 2023, but former British Prime Ministers Boris Johnson and Liz Truss have said they will not allow this, since the people of Scotland have already expressed their will in 2014. The current prime minister, Rishi Sunak, also ruled out the vote and called for the results of the 2014 referendum to be respected. Then 55% voted against the separation, 45% in favor.

One of the latest surveys by the research company Survation, conducted on September 28 and 29, showed that 41% of Scots support independence from the UK, 59% oppose it. The survey was conducted among 1011 people in Scotland over the age of 16.
