A fatal case of hantavirus infection has been reported in Taipei, Taiwan, according to China Central Television (CCTV).

Hantaviruses are a genus of viruses that are transmitted to humans through contact with rodents. Hantaviruses can cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.

“Recently, one fatal case of hantavirus infection was reported in Taipei City,” CCTV writes.

A large-scale sanitary treatment is currently being carried out in Taipei, and the authorities have increased the number of rat baits. Specialists in monitoring and control of rats have also been involved to help the population with prevention.

According to television reports, only one case has been reported in Taipei so far. However, people are concerned about the spread of the virus.

An outbreak of the deadly Hantavirus occurred on the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius, which was en route from Argentina to Cape Verde. WHO has confirmed seven cases of infection, three people have died.
