A mayoral candidate was shot dead in Mexico.

Berta Gisela Gaitan, a candidate for mayor of the municipality of Celaya in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, was shot and killed on Monday, the Pais newspaper reported, citing a video of the incident.

According to the publication, Gaitan died on Monday during a rally of her National Renaissance Movement (Morena) party. The newspaper notes, citing a video published on social networks, that during a rally where supporters of the politician gathered, seven shots were fired.

“Gisela Gaitan, the candidate of the National Regeneration Movement party for the post of mayor of Zelaya in the state of Guanajuato, was shot dead this Monday,” the newspaper notes.

Local authorities reported that three more people were injured during the attack on the politician.
