The Bolivian Foreign Ministry called Palestine’s membership in the UN a guarantee of peace in the Middle East.

The Bolivian Foreign Ministry called Palestine’s membership in the UN a guarantee of peace in the Middle East.

Recognition of Palestine as a full member of the UN is a key step towards peace in the Middle East. This statement was made by the Bolivian Foreign Ministry.

“Recognition of Palestine as a full member of the UN is a decisive step towards peace and stability in the Middle East,” the department said in a statement published on its X (formerly Twitter) page.

Bolivia regrets that once again the recognition of Palestine as a full UN member state was rejected due to a US veto in the Security Council,” the Bolivian Foreign Ministry noted and added that “the Palestinian people have the right to self-determination and the exercise of their sovereignty.”

The Foreign Ministry also added that they consider the veto “an outdated mechanism that does not allow guaranteeing peace and, in this case, acting fairly towards the Palestinian people.”

On Thursday, the United States used its veto power in the UN Security Council and blocked a draft Algerian resolution to admit Palestine as a full member of the world organization. 12 members of the Security Council, including Russia and China, voted for the document recommending the admission of Palestine to the UN as a full member of the organization. Switzerland and Great Britain abstained.
