The Indian Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of de-escalation in the Middle East.

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar held telephone conversations with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian, noting the need to de-escalate the situation in the Middle East.

“Raised the issue of the release of 17 Indian sailors from the MSC Aries,” Jaishankar said on X (formerly Twitter). “Discussed the current situation in the region. Stressed the need to avoid escalation, exercise restraint and return to diplomacy. Agreed to stay in touch.”

The MSC Aries was previously detained by the Iranian military in the Strait of Hormuz. There are 25 crew members on board, including 17 Indians.

The Indian Foreign Ministry previously commented on the Iranian attack. The department said that New Delhi is concerned about the worsening situation in the Middle East and called for immediate de-escalation.
