The mayor of Amsterdam has called for the sale of cocaine and ecstasy to be regulated.

The mayor of Amsterdam has called for the sale of cocaine and ecstasy to be regulated.

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema believes that the sale of hard drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy should be regulated as the only way to combat the drug trade.

“I think some drugs are dangerous and I also think it would be wise to reduce drug use. However, I also notice that the way we do it is not helping… we need to think about better ways to regulate drugs.” Halsema said.

According to her, current methods of control have not had any effect, the street price of cocaine has remained the same.

“Isn’t it ironic that we leave the drug trade to criminals and don’t try to find a way to create a civilized market?” –  the mayor of Amsterdam noted.

Halsema noted that as well as a regulated cocaine market, she might also consider creating a market for ecstasy.
