A £5 billion lawsuit against Sony PlayStation has been filed in the UK, in which some 9 million plaintiffs accuse the company of ‘robbing people’.

“(Sony PlayStation) has allegedly ‘ripped people off’ by charging a 30% commission on every digital game and in-game purchase made through the PlayStation Store. Over the past six years, consumers have overpaid up to £5 billion on digital game purchases,” says the official announcement.

A class-action lawsuit against the gaming company was reportedly filed by consumer advocate Alex Neal in the Competition Court of Appeals on Friday. It accuses Sony PlayStation of violating antitrust laws by abusing its market position to impose unfair terms on game developers and publishers, resulting in higher prices for consumers.

According to the lawsuit, UK residents who have purchased digital games or additional content on their console or through the PlayStation Store since August 19, 2016 are included in the lawsuit and are potentially eligible for compensation. The estimated amount of compensation per claimant is between £67 and £562, excluding interest.

“With this lawsuit, I am defending the millions of people in the UK who were unwittingly deceived. We believe that Sony has abused its position and robbed its customers,” Neil said.
