In Belgium, there are protests against the energy company TotalEnergies.

Anti-fossil fuel protests began in Belgium on Saturday, with hundreds of activists attempting to block TotalEnergies facilities, protest organizers the CodeRouge coalition said.

“The action has begun, now hundreds of citizens from the Code Red coalition are heading to the facilities of TotalEnergies. Our civil disobedience action is aimed at displacing fossil fuels in the energy sector,” the organization said on Twitter.

The actions take place in the city of Liege and the village of Felouis in the Walloon region. There, the protester is blocking the roads next to the facilities of the energy company.

“Citizens are sounding the alarm about the climate, social and humanitarian catastrophe caused by the activities of companies like TotalEnergies,” said CodeRouge spokeswoman Chloe Mikolajczak.

The company has made huge profits amid a social and environmental crisis where families don’t know if they’ll be able to pay their energy bills, she says.

In particular, she indicated that the company plans to pay its shareholders additional dividends totaling 2.6 billion euros.

“Energy companies that use hydrocarbons must finance the transformation that will allow us to move away from fossil fuels,” – said the representative of the organization.
