At least 35 people died when the floor of a temple collapsed in India.

At least 35 people have died in the Indian city of Indore (Madhya Pradesh) after falling into a stepwell in a temple floor, state officials say.

“A total of 35 people were killed, one was missing, 14 people were rescued. Two people returned home safely after receiving medical assistance. A search is underway for missing persons,” said Indore T. Ilayaraja, a spokesman for the authorities.

He noted that the rescue operation lasts more than 18 hours, more than 70 people take part in it, including military personnel and rescue services.

According to preliminary data, the cause of the collapse was the overcrowding of the temple.

Step wells are common in India. Stairs with platforms built into the walls of the well descend to a depth of tens of meters, allowing you to approach the water, regardless of its level. The stepped structure of the well facilitates access to water both during drought and in other periods.

State authorities ordered an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. They will also pay 500,000 rupees (a little over $6,000) to the relatives of the victims, while the victims will receive 50,000 rupees (about $600) from the state government.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was saddened by the incident.

“Extremely saddened by the accident in Indore. Spoke to Chief Minister Shivraj Chowhan and received an update on the situation. The state government is leading the rescue and relief efforts. My prayers are with all the victims and their families,” he tweeted.
