Borrell promised the new Iraqi prime minister EU support.

The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, congratulated on the appointment of the new Prime Minister of Iraq, Muhammad al-Sudani, promised support in the implementation of the announced reforms, in the fight against corruption.

“This is a good day for Iraq, its relations with the EU, and an important step towards security, stability and prosperity. The EU looks forward to working closely with the prime minister and his government to support the implementation of the announced reform program and the fight against corruption,” Borrell said in a written statement.


According to him, the EU is ready to host a meeting of the Cooperation Council between Iraq and the European Union in the near future.


On Thursday, members of the Iraqi parliament voted by a majority vote in favor of a vote of confidence in the cabinet of ministers led by al-Sudani.

In the new government, the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs remained with Fuad Hussein. The Ministry of Defense was headed by Sabit Said al-Abbasi, the Ministry of Oil – Hayyan Abdulgani, the Ministry of Internal Affairs – Abdulamir al-Mishri.


The program of the government of al-Sudani includes holding early parliamentary elections during the year, settling disputes between the federal authorities and the Kurdish Autonomous Region, and a wide range of reforms in the social and economic spheres.
