China calls on the parties to the conflict in Myanmar to cease fire and avoid escalating the situation, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a briefing on Tuesday.

Between April 1 and April 11, the rebel ethnic Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), in alliance with the People’s Defense Forces, as well as members of youth and student anti-government organizations, occupied most of the territory of the Myawaddy district of Myanmar’s Karen state. Last Thursday, the rebels captured the last government military base in the district, Camp 275.

“We have noted the relevant messages. China calls on all parties to cease fire and hostilities, resolve differences peacefully through dialogue and consultation, and avoid escalating the situation,” the diplomat said.
