European Commission launches investigation against Hungary over fuel prices

The European Commission (EC) has launched proceedings against Hungary due to the setting of different fuel prices for local and foreign cars, the EC said in a statement.

“Today, the commission decided to open an infringement procedure against Hungary for introducing measures that are contrary to the provisions of the internal market. Hungary introduces different fuel prices for cars with foreign license plates and cars with Hungarian numbers,” writes the EC.

Vehicles with Hungarian license plates, including tractors and agricultural machinery, are officially entitled to lower fuel prices of 60–70%. Cars with foreign plates cannot take advantage of these reduced prices, the EC notes.
