Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan discussed with US President’s special envoy Steve Witkoff the progress of negotiations on the implementation of the agreement between Washington and Tehran, the head of Turkish diplomacy admitted difficulties and deadlocks in the process.
⠀
“Today, the negotiations actually started. We just talked with (Steve, special envoy to the President of the United States) According to Witkoff, this topic was also on the agenda. After signing the memorandum, a number of issues were left for discussion within 60 days. Political will has already been demonstrated on the most important topics, and I believe that thanks to intensive work, the existing problems will be overcome,” Fidan said.
⠀
The Minister noted that at the current stage, the parties have to resolve a number of complex technical issues. According to him, we are talking primarily about nuclear verification mechanisms, the sanctions regime and the creation of a system to prevent new conflicts between the parties.
⠀
Fidan stressed that the issues under discussion are of fundamental importance, so the negotiation process may periodically encounter difficulties and temporary impasses. According to him, such delays should be treated as a natural part of negotiations.
⠀
The head of Turkish diplomacy also warned about the risks of external interference in the settlement process. In his opinion, there are forces interested in disrupting the agreements reached and capable of trying to take advantage of any difficulties during the negotiations.
⠀
On the night of June 18, Iran and the United States remotely signed a memorandum that presupposes the end of the military conflict that began on February 28.
⠀
The memorandum also sets a timeline for when the United States will lift the naval blockade and Iran will restore navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
⠀
In addition, Iran undertakes not to obtain nuclear weapons, and the issue of the Iranian nuclear program should be settled by a separate agreement.
⠀
The parties will hold negotiations on this issue within 60 days. For Tehran, the result should be the lifting of anti-Iranian sanctions.
