Italy may introduce a state of emergency due to problems with gas supplies from Russia

The Italian authorities are considering the possibility of introducing a state of emergency due to problems with the supply of Russian gas.

It is noted that the Ministry of Ecological Modernization and Transformation of Italy may already next week (June 20-26) raise the current warning level to the level of “danger” in the field of energy supply in the event that Russian gas supplies from Russia continue to be cut.

The Italian ministry clarified that the level of “danger” does not imply any off-market measures and provides for guarantees of supply from operators.

The Italian government is already working to reduce gas consumption. In the event of a shortage of energy resources, restrictions will be set on the temperature and duration of heating or cooling houses and public institutions, reducing the lighting of cities, as well as roads.

At the same time, Italy is negotiating an increase in purchases with suppliers from Algeria, Libya, and Azerbaijan. The authorities are also considering increasing domestic production, but they understand that this will require large investments, as well as a revision of drilling regulations, which the country tried to ban several years ago.
