Japanese authorities assured that they are aware of the plans of Mitsubishi and Mitsui to stay in Sakhalin-2

The Japanese authorities are aware of the intention of Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsui & Co to retain participation in the Russian oil and gas project Sakhalin-2 under a new operator, said Cabinet Secretary General Hirokazu Matsuno

“Now companies will be able to notify the Russian side of their decision to participate in the new operator, after which the Russian government must decide whether to approve it or not. We intend to closely monitor the situation and take all measures for stable LNG supplies,” he said.

The fact that Mitsubishi plans to stay in Sakhalin-2 became known on August 25. After receiving notification from Mitsubishi and Mitsui, the Russian side must react within three days and make a final decision on their participation in the project under the new operator.
