Merz announced Fry’s nomination for the post of head of the CDU/CSU faction in the Bundestag

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced the nomination of the head of the Chancellor’s department, Torsten Fry, to the post of the new head of the CDU/CSU faction in the Bundestag after the departure of Jens Spahn.

On July 18, Spahn announced his resignation from the post of head of the CDU/CSU faction amid the surrogacy scandal. As reported by the Bild newspaper, he and his husband had a child with a surrogate mother in the United States, whereas in Germany this procedure is prohibited.

“In connection with the re-election of the chairman of the (CDU/CSU) faction, Markus Zeder and I have today nominated Torsten Fry,” Merz wrote on his social media account.

The Chancellor noted that Fry represents the “middle wing” of the CDU/CSU faction and will be able to ensure, according to him, well-coordinated interaction between the parliament, the CDU/CSU partner in the ruling coalition, the SPD party and the German government.

It is expected that a vote on Fry’s candidacy will take place next week during an emergency meeting of the CDU/CSU faction in the Bundestag.
