The Indonesian parliament has called for stricter controls on foreigners after the murder of a Bali resident, who is suspected of being a Singaporean citizen who has lived in the country for about a year after his visa expired.

A member of Indonesia’s parliament, Njoman Parta, said the case should be a “national wake-up call” for the country’s entire immigration control system.

“If a foreign citizen has been in Indonesia with an expired visa for a year, this indicates serious shortcomings in the migration control system. This case should be an important lesson,” the parliamentarian said, as quoted by the Media Indonesia portal.

Parta expressed confidence that other foreigners with expired visas could be in Bali, and called for a large-scale check, as well as increased cooperation between the immigration service, police, local authorities, traditional communities and owners of hotels, villas and other accommodation facilities.

The reason for the statement was the investigation into the murder of Bali resident Angelica Sukherman.

According to Denpasar police, the main suspect is a Singaporean citizen who allegedly stayed in Indonesia for about a year after the expiration of his residence permit.
