German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that he did not expect such a strong outrage in Germany over the scandal with the head of the CDU/CSU faction in the Bundestag, Jens Spahn.

On July 18, Shpan announced his resignation from the post of head of the faction amid the surrogacy scandal. He and his husband had a child with a surrogate mother in the United States, whereas in Germany it is prohibited. In Germany, the Punks were accused of double morality, as he had previously criticized this method of procreation.

“At least, (I expected) not on this scale, but it was probably due to his (Spahn’) personality and the way he reported it, and it caused quite a lot of indignation,” Merz said in an interview with ZDF TV channel in response to a question.

He also admitted that the scandal surrounding Spahn had caused significant damage to the reputation of the CDU party, for which, according to him, the topic of surrogacy is one of the central in terms of Christian values and morality.

“It became very clear to me yesterday during the day. And that is why we have taken appropriate action,” Merz said in this regard.

The Chancellor confirmed that Spahn informed the CDU about the use of surrogacy procedures . At the same time, he did not answer the question of whether he felt deceived by his party colleague after that.

“I don’t want to publicly assess this right now, but the process itself has been completed. He (Spahn) resigned,” the German Chancellor concluded.
