The CIA believed that Hugo Chavez allegedly wanted to influence American politics

American intelligence believed that the late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez allegedly wanted to influence domestic politics in the United States, according to a published CIA report.

“In April 2004, intelligence indicated that Chavez had stated his goal of preventing the re-election of the current US president, which indicated his intention to influence US domestic policy,” the document says.

The CIA report claims that between 2004 and 2020, Chavez and his successor, Nicolas Maduro, allegedly showed interest in manipulating election results using electronic voting systems.

At the same time, in 2006, the US intelligence community concluded that the Venezuelan government lacked the ability to predictably influence the outcome of elections outside Venezuela.
