Former Italian Prime Minister Conte does not see leaders in Europe who prefer diplomacy to military force

The leader of the opposition Italian 5-Star Movement, former Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, believes that statements in Europe about the alleged threat from Russia are propaganda to justify multibillion-dollar spending on rearmament.

According to him, Europe is making a “serious historical mistake” by indirectly participating in the conflict in Ukraine.

“Driven by the conviction to conduct the conflict indirectly to the very end, Europe is making a serious historical mistake…> thus pushing away the prospect of a negotiated settlement, no matter how difficult it may be. I don’t see any leaders capable of defending the superiority of politics over force,” he said in an interview with La Repubblica newspaper.

The former prime minister called on the future government of Italy to resolutely abandon the policy of militarization.

“It is important that we understand that the future of Europe lies not in sending missiles, but in sending messengers of peace,” he stressed.
