Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has threatened to impeach President Tamas Szujok if he does not sign an amendment to the Constitution providing for his resignation.
⠀
“On Monday, parliament will adopt the 17th amendment to the Constitution. The president will have five days to sign it. If he does not do this, impeachment proceedings may be initiated against him,” he wrote on Facebook.
⠀
On Thursday, a rally was held near the presidential palace in Budapest against the arbitrariness of the Magyar. The head of the Fidesz faction, Gergei Guyash, said that the prime minister’s actions weaken democracy in Hungary and lead to autocracy.
⠀
Magyar called on Shujok, as well as members of the Constitutional Court and the Prosecutor General of Hungary, to resign before May 31, 2026. The term of office of the current president expires in the spring of 2029. Shujok himself stated that he sees no constitutional grounds for premature resignation from office.
⠀
According to Magyar, the process of drafting a new Constitution will begin in September, which will be approved by a national referendum, and before that, a new president will appear in Hungary.
