Le Pen begins her election campaign

Marine Le Pen, the leader of the parliamentary faction of the French right-wing National Unification party, begins her election campaign on Wednesday after the court of appeal’s decision allowed her to run for president, the Progres newspaper reports.

The day before, Le Pen announced that she would run for president of France in 2027. The elections will be held on April 18 and May 2, 2027. She added that she will start an election campaign very soon together with the head of the party Jordan Bardella.

“The leader of the National Union faction begins his campaign on Wednesday,” the newspaper writes.

During their first trip as part of the election campaign, Le Pen and Bardella will arrive in the Sarthe department in northwestern France.

Earlier, the Prosecutor General of the Paris Court of Appeal, Marie-Susan Le Keogh, said that due to the filing of a cassation appeal, Le Pen would be able to launch an election campaign without an electronic bracelet, which she was sentenced to wear.

On Tuesday, the Paris Court of Appeal commuted Le Pen’s sentence in the case of embezzlement of European Parliament funds. Her ban on participating in elections was reduced from five years to 45 months, 30 of which are suspended, which allows her to run for president. Le Pen was also sentenced to three years in prison, including two years of probation and one with an electronic bracelet, and a fine of 100,000 euros.
