The existence of the North Atlantic Alliance in the future is not guaranteed, former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.
⠀
“No one can guarantee that NATO will exist forever,” Stoltenberg said in an interview with Spiegel magazine.
⠀
Following this, he called on European NATO countries to increase their defense spending and thereby, in his words, try to prevent the United States from leaving the alliance.
⠀
“One of these measures is to increase our defense spending. This increases the likelihood that the United States will fulfill its obligations, and if they do not, it is all the more important to take this step,” Stoltenberg said.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that the United States could withdraw from the alliance, and the situation in the Middle East has only exacerbated the issue. In March, he called on members of the bloc to send ships to help unblock the Strait of Hormuz. Germany, France and Spain refused, and the UK, he said, agreed too late. The head of the White House promised to remember the cowardly position of the NATO allies.
